Its really interesting how musical trends happen. How in different locations around the globe at the exact same moment.. there are movements for music of all types.
And even more interesting is how in those smaller areas the music attempt is consolidated, either with the same goal of achievement or music trend.
I was listening to a so cal band a friend of mine told me to take a listen to.. and what I noticed was a vast amount of similarities with other so cal bands, no matter their genre of ska or hard rock they had something in common.
It was similar in the bay… although as someone in it, it was harder to get this outside perspective…
I just think something is to be said about this.
The humanity of it all perhaps
How much of a phenomenon it really can be..
I’m not sure.
… just something I have been thinking about..
Man… I haven’t updated in MONTHS
It’s been hard.. Not going to lie.. haven’t really found a scene in Eugene. Alas I may have finally found my doorway. Lately I have been thrown into a spiral of local bands and house parties.
Maybe this will lead to something… I’m really hoping..
But yeah… just because I haven’t been updating doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking or discussing music/scenes. For example the observation above.
I was talking to a new friend of mine the other day about the San Francisco scene.. and how it’s a good place to get noticed.. She then blatantly said the San Francisco is dieing and not the best place to go..
At first I was a little taken back by the statement… more or less in denial of it.. but.. after thinking more about it… she has a bit of a point.. I mean I can’t speak fully to it since I haven’t been around for the last like.. 6 months.. but I see her point. San Francisco isn’t turning out bands like it used to be… Bands can’t just build up a following in the bay and go big as I used to see… There is a greater emphasis on touring… but even more music and up in coming bands are thriving more in smaller “big” cities. Perhaps this is where home base is these days for bands still trying to make it… Now all this might just be coming from my new location and peer influence.. but.. perhaps the coast music cities are dieing a bit… Perhaps we need to shift focus to new places such as Seattle, Santa Fe, maybe even Chicago… I mean.. they are due for a new burst of music talent…
Its like cities have an overwhelming amount of new talent for a few years… go quiet and a few years later.. pick up again.. admittedly some take more time than others to rejuvenate. I really hope San Francisco picks up again.. or that I am completely mistaken in this observation… that if and when I go back it will be just as “happening” as I know it.
That is another thing I have been dealing with lately… Will I come back? When will I come back? I am faced with a decision of what job to take this summer.. one option will keep me from the bay area until next Christmas… or I can choose to go back in June.. At this point.. the only thing swaying me from not staying away is the music scene.. and perhaps the opportunity to work with some bands.. or tour.
I am in a state of indecision… I am also considering moving from Eugene to Seattle, New York or even back to the bay…
I just flat out need a music scene.. and Eugene simply hasn’t supplied that at least not ‘til recently. But its reliability that such a spurt of music will last is questionable.. So my choice comes down to a scene… something I can get involved with and call my own… and I am open to suggestions and opinions.
New thought… been listening to the new track Dave Smallen put up a few days ago… his approach to releasing his new album I find pretty interesting. He has been there, experienced life in the label… life without the label… life making it to the label… And perhaps this approach of his, producing his album on his own… releasing it in pieces as singles reflects a new era in music… Perhaps a goodbye to separate scenes and the uniting of music in a new form through technology and self-management. The freeing of musicians from the confines of labels, managers, publicists… I mean most do all the work getting to the label.. who says they can’t keep going.
Anyways… that’s all I really got to say right now… who knows next time I’ll update… but.. for now… this has been Paige.
Check out Dave’s new songs : Dave Smallen
