Duck Fuzz
Gum: $3.28
Entrance fee: $10
Gas: some odd amount
Parking: $10
Seeing Petros and Johnny rolling around on stage playing an encore song: priceless
If you weren't at the Oakland Metro last night… well… your loss. Let’s see… who was there?.. Dylan DiMartini (formerly of Broken Dolls), Two Seconds, DESA, Push To Talk, and Panda.
For videos and pictures from the show... and older shows... Check the links on the sidebar.
An explanation for the title... well... I can’t really explain it.
It is an expression a few friends and I use with a vague definition... and it very much applied to situations last night...
After Broken Dolls split up, Dylan started a new solo project. Seeing him stand there on stage with an acoustic and then hearing the music he plays is rather startling. You'd see him and think he was going to sound like, say... Secondhand Serenade. (Don’t know who that is? look it up. or check older posts) but he brought the sound of his old band broken dolls to his set last night. A harder rock. I really cant think of any other word to describe it besides unexpected, but unexpected in a good way. The kids got talent, a lot of talent. Dylan is planning on putting together a new band and currently has a drummer in mind, but is still in search for a bassist. I can guarantee you'll be hearing more from him in the future.
Can’t really say anything about Two Seconds besides they're growing on me. I like the sound.
I never tire from seeing DESA live. I don’t tire from seeing any band really, but especially DESA. I always find their sets enjoyable. Although being bitten, shouldered, hit, and stepped on wasn't that great... but hey, I'm used to it by now. I still kinda miss Adam's dreads... so new drummer... not bad.
Note: the drummer of Push To Talk makes great faces while playing. Watch him sometime. Also... the guitarist... I LOVE the way he dances around.
I don't think its possible to dislike panda just because of their charisma during performances. as I mentioned earlier.. Petros and Johnny rolling around on stage during the last song... well, encore song… was great. Really sucks if you missed it. Especially since I didn’t get a video of it... but I’m sure someone did.. Check YouTube.
So during the beginning of the show I was standing near the stage in between sets and these 2 girls were behind me... and being that my friend wasn't there yet, i was bored, and the girls were talking loudly... I overheard them talking about teenyboppers and how much the sucked. It was rather sad though, they were trying oh so hard to be "cool". Almost everyone exhibits some sort of teenybopper characteristic sometime during his or her life. I don’t know... I don't mean to preach or anything but those 2 girls really just needed to get over themselves… and I was tempted to tell them that, but I also like to avoid drama.. So I kept that to myself. What is the harm if a person acts like a teenybopper? Sure it can be annoying... but those people buy a hell of a lot of merch from the bands. And really if a person likes a band... shouldn't that person really just want them to prosper? And the financial support from the sales of that merchandise to those so-called teenyboppers really is a good thing for them. For me, if anyone, the bitchy self-righteous people at the shows are who piss me off.
heh.. okay that’s enough of that...
so... coming up... Monster Squad is playing at the Gilman on the 19th... go to that.
Also... the actual is playing bottom of the hill on the 28th... I think its the 28th... you should check that out.
On another note... I'm looking for an internship. Anything having to do with the music industry would be fine, but preferably something with booking or labels. Drop me a line if you know of anything eh?

Drunk People Make Me Laugh
Well... This guy was… More than drunk... I think smashed or hammered might fit better. You know how between sets at shows there really isn’t much to do besides make small talk with the people you came with or find some sort of entertainment elsewhere? Well he was my entertainment… Whenever he walked by my friend Daniela and I he'd make a new face. We noticed (you see we were just sitting there watching him... that doesn't sound creepy at all) this guy was going up to almost every female he could find. Not to mention his inability to navigate through the crowd... that was just... I cant even think of a word for it.. Sway.. Stare.. Take a step forward… Take step back... Almost fall over... repeated 2 or 3 times and then proceed on. But enough about the trashed guy from Tracy who was in SF looking for a job (all of this I know since he decided to more or less share his life story with Daniela)...
Good evening ladies and gents
Or should I say good morning?
Anyways...
I spent the evening at bottom of the hill... Hanalei, Pompeii, Audrye Sessions and Push to Talk were playing. So Hanalei... lets just say I wasn't too thrilled... I mean he (solo act) wasn't horrible or anything... just nothing special. His sound reminded me a bit of Dispatch. Like the style and they way he sang the lyrics. Daniela and I hung on the couches in the back during that set... I have to say tonight is the first time I think I’ve ever seen the pool table actually used to play pool... wow... how thrilling... moving on...
As for Pompeii... I like them. The energy and real interest in the music is what I enjoyed most, especially in the guy on lead vocals. His sincerity on his face while singing is probably what did it for me... the way he moved his feet when he played was rather cute as well (the video might have it in there... check.)
Audrye Sessions’ set brings up something interesting.. When you see a band the view from right at the stage is a completely different show than if you were closer to (in this case) the door. The band is amazing (man I need a new adj. to use seems amazing is all I’ve been saying lately) from both viewpoints, but you catch different things from different spots. Like up close you more look from person to person but from the back you can see the band as a whole. I don’t know, but for me it changes the feel of the show from the different areas.
Anyways... enough of that rambling Audrye Session's set was fantastic as usual. Ryan's (lead vocals) passion when playing really makes it for me. The band just sorta clicks. Scott Vicknair of Poor Bailey joined in for Relentless. Speaking of Poor Bailey.. they got a show coming up on the 19th at Blakes with Audrye Sessions, The Morning Benders, The Catholic Comb, and Panda. Should be awesome so check it out.
Push to Talk opened, to Ben Flanagan's dismay, with Problems. But hey, its a catchy tune. I have pieces of Relentless and Problems stuck in my head.. Oh also... while thinking of Ben Flanagan... The Actual is playing Bottom of the Hill on the 28th with strike anywhere and a few other bands. I'll be there.. so you should be there.
I hadn't seen Push to Talk in over a year... A bit of a line up change, but I enjoyed the set, or at least what I saw of it. Had to leave 'round 12ish. All in all it was a great show.
hmm so who else did I see there. Joey Bustos of Street To Nowhere... Matt R something... don’t remember how to spell his last name.. he produced or something along those lines street to nowhere's album charmingly awkward... some of the guys from the morning benders (if you are 18+ or have a fake id go to their show at Blakes as mentioned earlier) and.. John Paulson of Talking House Productions.
I'm tired.. and if i don't post this tonight... I'ma end up not getting this done till like.. next week.. so sorry folks but there shall be no "check out the bands/people mentioned earlier" section...
check back in the next 2 days for videos from the show which I shall put in a new post.. also look out for the new pictures from the show in the photo section.
