The Fest of Walnuts

... so... I've been slacking on my updates... well actually... I've just been really busy... and generally if I don't put a post up the same night as a show.. its going to take a while for me to get to it....

so... Panda show 2 weeks ago I gotta talk about...

and then the post about the band i saw tonight....

The Thursday before last I dropped by Cafe Du Nord to check out Panda... for the thousandth time... I really need to start focusing more on checking out bands I don't talk about all the time....
They were pretty awesome.. I have photos n videos... so I'll hopefully get those up..
I can't say this was their best show... 'cause there are just some shows where the bands are undeniably.. ON... and although they played a great set, as to be expected, this set wasn't quite to the holy fucking shit I can't live without this band level... but still.. great...
I'm really digging their new stuff... you can definitely note the Beatles influence. but it has been... Pandified...

Its sad to see this stage of Panda come to an end... but their CD release is in November, and I'm sure ... positive in fact... we'll be hearing more from them in the future.
I wish the boys luck with school.
Look back soon for an interview with the Panda boys... sorry I've been mentioning it for a while... but it just hasn't all gotten pulled together yet...soon man, soon.

Before I go on to the inspiration for tonight's post... here's something else that's been going on in the life of Paige and life at Talking House..

The Matches have been in working on tracks for their new album... recording stuff.. testing things out... before the above mentioned Panda show.. I was in studio while they were there and got a chance to hear what they've been working on... I'm not sure if they're aware of it, but they've stumbled upon brilliance. Or at least thats what appeared to be to me that night. I say that I'm not sure they know of it because of the observations made while they've been in the House. The constant testing of new angles on the songs that sound amazing to begin with... the uneasiness about whether there could be something more or better done to a song... but I think this is what makes most of their music so great... the thought, critique, and intensified interest. But then again, one only hopes... and assumes.. that every musician cares and puts that much effort into their music. It was just interesting to observe the ways these guys go about doing it.
From what I got... the sound of the album does have some reference to their first album, E Von Dahl Killed the Locals, but still holds to Decomposer.
They've got a bay area show coming up in October. Oct 27th to be exact. Bringing back the HELL3. Its at Kimballs in Oakland... They share the bill with... Audrye Sessions, Maldroid, and Stop The Malarky... its all ages... and theres a costume contest..... so be cool n dress up.... if you don't.... you'll more or less look like an idiot...
if you can't make that show however due to some random reason.. like say its you schools homecoming dance that night.... which is screwing me over...... oooooorrrr if you're low on cash...
they have an acoustic set at Rasputin on Telegraph in Berkeley on Oct 25th..

Every year my city has the Walnut Festival... and with the years... they have been getting more and more good bands.. or... more... youth friendly bands to play it. It was quite nice... I traveled a whole mile from my home to check out Overview. Honestly, in the beginning... I wasn't too fond of these guys. But that is all questionable because it was more that i was disappointed that they won over Panda for the BFD local spot. I have to admit though, they were definitely worthy of it. Their sound is less Wolfmothery than more Wolfmothery... but has a definite hint of Wolfmother... but only a hint. They have a unique quality to them, an appealing unique quality.
They've built a pretty decent following in consideration with the shows they've played. I think you gotta take into account however, that these guys, all of them, are seemingly every girls dream indie hipster boy(i'm not even sure if thats the right classification for them). But this isn't the case of good looks compensate for not so great music. Their sound. especially the voice Spencer has, a bit of a howl to it and pretty distinct, is almost addictive. See 'em once... its eh.. not a bad sound.... twice... they might have something... three times... shit man, i gotta get that CD... They're like crack.. hah... well maybe not that extreme... but they grow on you. There is no denying they are good to start off with... but the more you see them/listen to them the more one becomes aware of just how good they are. good really isn't the right word... but my vocabulary sucks... and I'm too lazy to go to thesaurus online... anyways... These guys draw you in. I was watching the crowd tonight... and more and more people wandered away from the games, away from the rides, away from the funnel cake line... to the stage to see who it was that was playing. Its something about them that is seemingly aesthetic to the ears and mind. I can see them becoming one of the more talked about bands on the scene in the next year, depending...
Go see these guys for yourself. They've got a show this Thursday with DESA at the Oakland Metro... should be a pretty good show.. they leave in about a week for a 2 month tour... so catch them while they're still in town
Also.. should hopefully have an interview up with them... sometime in the next 2 weeks..

that more or less concludes this post...

check the sidebar for links to pictures n videos..

Yours truly,
Paige

I Didn't Die...

...I don't think....
hey people... sorry for the lack of updatetation (i invent words?) the last couple weeks... I've been pretty busy... Senior year just started.. well not just.. I'm like 3 or 4 weeks in now.. but still. Starting to do all that college stuff... hey.. anyone wanna pay me for sitting around and doing nothing? 'cause i need money to be able to pay for college... but am too busy to get a legit after school job... enough about that though.... to the point of this post....
I... have been meaning to put up a post bout the Bay Area Indie Music Fest... but.. just haven't gotten around to it.. so now its kinda out of my mind... what is safe to say is... most of the bands were pretty good... there were sound issues... but i guess there was drama with their original sound guys... so.. its allowed... and... the whole band member-fan hookup... really does happen (but that's all I'll say about that). It seems whenever i see the lead singer of Scissors for Lefty on stage someone is taking his clothes off... it wasn't like the whole being pantsed thing at bottom of the hill... but it was funny. If you missed that, you missed a great set. Special thanks goes out to the Panda boys for letting me chill for the day. Oh speaking of the Panda boys... new interview with them should be up soon... if i get all their responses soon...(hint hint nudge nudge ...Jonny... Garet). Also..
they have a show on Thursday
at Cafe Du Nord
with the Morning Benders and the Deadly Syndrome.
The show is all ages,
doors at 8, show at 8:30,
and its $8 cover.
be there.
Panda opens.

Also on Anton Patzner just put a post up on his blog with links to songs he recorded in his backyard.... check 'em out:

That's all i really have to update on right now... I'm sure I'm forgetting something... but I need to do my Law homework.. so oh well
Oh also... who wants to get me free tickets to the Treasure Island Music Festival?
