Seeing Petros and Johnny rolling around on stage playing an encore song: priceless
If you weren't at the Oakland Metro last night… well… your loss. Let’s see… who was there?.. Dylan DiMartini (formerly of Broken Dolls), Two Seconds, DESA, Push To Talk, and Panda.
For videos and pictures from the show... and older shows... Check the links on the sidebar.
An explanation for the title... well... I can’t really explain it.
It is an expression a few friends and I use with a vague definition... and it very much applied to situations last night...
After Broken Dolls split up, Dylan started a new solo project. Seeing him stand there on stage with an acoustic and then hearing the music he plays is rather startling. You'd see him and think he was going to sound like, say... Secondhand Serenade. (Don’t know who that is? look it up. or check older posts) but he brought the sound of his old band broken dolls to his set last night. A harder rock. I really cant think of any other word to describe it besides unexpected, but unexpected in a good way. The kids got talent, a lot of talent. Dylan is planning on putting together a new band and currently has a drummer in mind, but is still in search for a bassist. I can guarantee you'll be hearing more from him in the future.
Can’t really say anything about Two Seconds besides they're growing on me. I like the sound.
I never tire from seeing DESA live. I don’t tire from seeing any band really, but especially DESA. I always find their sets enjoyable. Although being bitten, shouldered, hit, and stepped on wasn't that great... but hey, I'm used to it by now. I still kinda miss Adam's dreads... so new drummer... not bad.
Note: the drummer of Push To Talk makes great faces while playing. Watch him sometime. Also... the guitarist... I LOVE the way he dances around.
I don't think its possible to dislike panda just because of their charisma during performances. as I mentioned earlier.. Petros and Johnny rolling around on stage during the last song... well, encore song… was great. Really sucks if you missed it. Especially since I didn’t get a video of it... but I’m sure someone did.. Check YouTube.
So during the beginning of the show I was standing near the stage in between sets and these 2 girls were behind me... and being that my friend wasn't there yet, i was bored, and the girls were talking loudly... I overheard them talking about teenyboppers and how much the sucked. It was rather sad though, they were trying oh so hard to be "cool". Almost everyone exhibits some sort of teenybopper characteristic sometime during his or her life. I don’t know... I don't mean to preach or anything but those 2 girls really just needed to get over themselves… and I was tempted to tell them that, but I also like to avoid drama.. So I kept that to myself. What is the harm if a person acts like a teenybopper? Sure it can be annoying... but those people buy a hell of a lot of merch from the bands. And really if a person likes a band... shouldn't that person really just want them to prosper? And the financial support from the sales of that merchandise to those so-called teenyboppers really is a good thing for them. For me, if anyone, the bitchy self-righteous people at the shows are who piss me off.
heh.. okay that’s enough of that...
so... coming up... Monster Squad is playing at the Gilman on the 19th... go to that.
Also... the actual is playing bottom of the hill on the 28th... I think its the 28th... you should check that out.
On another note... I'm looking for an internship. Anything having to do with the music industry would be fine, but preferably something with booking or labels. Drop me a line if you know of anything eh?
